Tips and Tricks for Effective Social Media

Posted by Seth Kline on June 17, 2010

Effective participation in social media is a new sort of necessity. Social media continues to take an ever-more-prominent role for marketers, writers, bloggers, and pretty much anyone who participates in the battle for online attention. But how can you manage creating content, and consuming others’ content that’s relevant to yours, alongside the fact that everything that you do online is inherently distracting?

Here are a few tips and tricks for better managing your time and efforts for effective blogging, Tweets, Fan Pages, etc.

1. Establish a coherent strategy and goals to work toward.

If you don’t have specific goals for your social media efforts, and an established strategy for reaching them, you will not only fail to see results – you’ll also end up losing interest, letting days go by without any posts or research.

2. Schedule time every day to devote to social media.

If you do this, then you won’t ever need to worry about other priorities getting in the way. There will always be something more immediate to distract you, but if it’s social media time, then put in the investment consistently or you won’t get anywhere.

3. Keep relevance at the top of your mind.

The time you spend on the Web in the name of social media is valuable work. To keep it valuable, eliminate overhead: every website you visit, every link you click, consciously rate the content on relevance to your project. If it’s not relevant, hit that back button.

4. Think of ideas in your free time, and write them down.

You can sit for an hour thinking of topics to write about, or you can keep a notepad/PDA/smartphone nearby and jot down ideas when you run across them in daily life. That way, you can devote your daily social media time to generating content.
